All applicants must complete the online Graduate Application. Please carefully read the instructions below and within the application to ensure that you correctly complete each section and submit all of your required materials.
This page offers information on eligibility, types of applicants, and step-by-step instructions on how to complete the Graduate Application.
Need more information? Review our FAQs for applicants. You can also register for one of our Graduate Admissions Webinars.
Eligibility
To be considered for admission, applicants must have:
- Received a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited university prior to the quarter for which the applicant seeks admission
- At least a B average in undergraduate coursework
Additionally, each department has its own criteria for admission. Please visit the Department Directory for each program's requirements.
Satisfaction of minimal standards does not, however, guarantee admission. Because the number of qualified applicants far exceeds the number of places available each term, many well-qualified applicants cannot be accommodated.
Starting an Application
A complete online Graduate Application is required to be considered for admission UC Santa Barbara for graduate study.
To register for an account, click Create an account under the First-time Users heading on the application home page. You will be prompted to input your email address, first and last name, and date of birth. Follow the instructions in the email that you receive to finalize your account.
Once you’ve created an account, you can start your application! After logging into your account, click the Start New Application link at the bottom of the screen. Select the Graduate Application option from the dropdown menu and click Create Application. After opening your application, carefully review all of the information on the Application Instructions page. You may also return to this tab at any time before submitting your application.
Note: Only current UCSB undergraduate students are eligible to apply for a Five-Year Combined Degree Program. Do not select this application option unless you are a current UCSB undergraduate interested in applying to one of our five-year programs.
Academic Program Selection
You will need to select your intended graduate major and degree objective from the drop-down menu in the application. You can find a complete list of graduate degree programs and application requirements in our Department Directory. Please note that most of our graduate programs accept applications for fall admission only.
Common graduate degree objective abbreviations:
- PhD: Doctor of Philosophy
- MA: Master of Arts
- MS: Master of Science
- PhD/MA or PhD/MS: Combined PhD and master’s program in which the student completes both the master’s and PhD degrees, usually earning the master’s after the first one to two years of study.
If you are not sure which degree objective to select or whether to apply to a combined PhD and master’s program or only the PhD, contact your department for more information. If you have not previously completed a master's degree in the field of study for which you are applying, it is recommended that you select the PhD/MA or PhD/MS option, if available.
Once you’ve completed the Academic Program page, click the Continue button to advance to the Requirements & Deadlines page, which lists the specific requirements and deadlines for your selected program. Each department has its own application deadline. A complete online application and all supporting documents must be submitted by the deadline in order to be considered for admission and fellowship support.
Program Information
On this page, select the UC Santa Barbara faculty members with whom you are most interested in working during your graduate studies as well as your specific research interest areas for your selected program. Refer to the Department Directory page for your program for any specific instructions or contact the department directly to inquire about whether a specific faculty advisor or research area is available for the current application cycle. Please also note that some programs do not collect this information, so not all applicants will complete this page.
Basic Information
It is important to maintain current and accurate information throughout the application cycle. Be sure to carefully review your name, date of birth, and contact information for accuracy before submitting your application.
Applicants are required to list their first and last name. If your Legal Name differs from your Lived Name, you will be able to indicate this on the application. You can also share any Previous Names in this section.
Applicants are required to report a permanent address in the application. You may also provide a mailing address if applicable.
To add an address, click the green Add Address button. In the Address Information pop-up window, select your address type and then input the required information. If you see your address listed in the suggestions that auto-populate in the dropdown menu when typing in the "Street" field, please select it. You may then be asked to validate the address. Be sure to save your address and confirm that it has been added to your application. If you’d like to edit or delete this entry, click on the address row to reopen the pop-up window. You may add an additional address by clicking Add Address.
You will be able to return to the Addresses section to make updates even after you have completed and submitted your online application. Please be sure to update this section of your application if your address changes during the application cycle.
The email address that you used to create your account will display here. If you would like to change or correct your email address, you will need to migrate your account. You may do so from this page by clicking the Migrate Account link and following the instructions.
Applicants are not required to provide a phone number in their application, but are welcome to do so here. If you have a U.S. phone number, type in your 10-digit phone number. The +1 country code and dashes will automatically be added. For non-U.S. phone numbers, be sure to include the + sign before the country code. You may also use the checkbox to indicate that the provided phone number is a mobile device.
Funding
The information you provide on this page is used by the department to determine if you are receiving (or have applied to receive) any external financial support and what types of funding you may be interested in as a graduate student. "External" support refers to financial awards provided to you for your graduate studies (e.g., fellowships, grants, etc.) that are not provided by UC Santa Barbara. This section does not constitute an application for specific UCSB fellowships or federal financial aid.
The first question specifically asks about any funding that has already been awarded to you. If you select Yes, you will need to provide details about the Awarding Agency and the confirmed funding that you will receive. Include the dollar amount and duration of support, and upload the External Agency Award Letter to the application. Please note that once you upload a letter, you will not be able to delete it. Be sure to confirm the document is accurate before uploading.
You can also indicate if you’ve applied for funding but have not yet heard back about whether or not you have been selected. Please provide detailed information about the Awarding Agency as well as the expected amount and duration of the support, if offered.
You may indicate which funding opportunities you are interested in being considered for as a graduate student at UCSB. Please note that the department that you are applying to will determine offers of financial support, if applicable. Indicating your interest in the application does not guarantee availability of funding opportunities or an offer of financial support. Please contact your department directly for additional information about funding.
Demographic Information
UC Santa Barbara is interested in developing a clearer picture of the backgrounds of our applicants. Applicant responses to questions about family history, military service, race/ethnicity, and gender identity will assist us in meeting this goal. The University of California is required to report demographic information for enrolled students to the U.S. Department of Education and other federal and state agencies. The application form is the primary source of demographic data for enrolled students.
We take seriously our responsibility to ensure that our diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and practices are fully compliant with both federal and state non-discrimination laws and consistent with applicable university policies. Equally important is our responsibility to ensure that the university is a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all. This information is used for aggregated statistical and outreach purposes only and will in no way influence the application review process.
In this section, you can indicate your current U.S. Military Service Status (if applicable) as well as additional information regarding military service.
In this section, you will be asked questions about your family background. Only the questions with a red asterisk (*) are required while the rest are optional. If you are unsure about how to respond to a question, please use your best judgement.
The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) survey is required by the Department of Education. If you are unsure on how to respond to a question, please use your best judgement.
The questions in this section are included in the application to help the University of California as a system better understand the diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds of our students. If you are unsure on how to respond to a question, please use your best judgement.
If you are a member of an American Indian or Alaska Native Tribal Affiliation, you can indicate so in this section. Upon selecting your primary affiliation type, you will be able to type in your specific affiliation. If you are not affiliated, you can leave this section blank and proceed to the next.
Your answers to the questions in this section will provide important and meaningful information for the overall provision of campus programs, resources, and support. For detailed information about why these gender and sexuality questions have been included in this application, please see the UCSB Graduate Admissions FAQs. This page also includes definitions of the selectable options in this section.
Citizenship
The questions in this section will help us to determine if you will need a visa to attend graduate school and if you may be considered a California resident for tuition purposes.
In this section, report your Country of Citizenship, Social Security Number (if applicable), and Country of Legal Residence. If you are a dual-citizen and one of the countries where you hold citizenship is the United States, list the United States as your first Country of Citizenship.
If you are not a US Citizen, you will be asked whether you are a permanent resident of the United States or to select your visa type for your graduate studies, if admitted. You may refer to the UCSB Office of International Students and Scholars' (OISS) website for more information or contact OISS directly if you are unsure which visa to select.
In this section, you can indicate if you are an enrolled member of an American Indian or Alaska Native tribe. If you have questions on how to complete this section, please contact gradadmissions@graddiv.ucsb.edu.
Indicate the Country, US State (if applicable), and City where you were born.
In this section, you are asked whether you attended a California high school for two or more years and whether you have been physically present in California for the last three years. Graduate Division staff are unable to advise on any questions related to residency. If you are unsure on how to complete this section, please contact the Office of the Registrar.
Education History
List all colleges and universities at which you completed one or more full academic terms (or equivalent). This includes community colleges, summer sessions, extension programs, and any other postsecondary education for which you received credit. Do not include high schools or college preparatory schools.
You must upload a transcript for each institution attended. You can either do so when entering your institution information, or return to the Education History page to upload at a later time. The transcript legend or key for each institution (usually found on the backside of the official transcript or in the school’s general catalog or website) must be included in your uploaded document.
DO NOT send your transcripts or any other documents directly to UCSB unless you have been admitted and chosen to attend UCSB, or you have been specifically instructed to do so. You must upload a PDF of your transcript to your application.
Adding an Institution
To add an institution, click the green Add Institution button. In the School Information pop-up window, enter and save your information. Each school that you attended must be added as a separate institution using the Add Institution button.
When searching for your institution, type a unique part of the institution’s name in the search field. Select your institution from the list that populate. If your school name still does not populate after entering several variations, type in the complete name of the school as it appears on your transcript. Note that some schools may be listed under common abbreviations (for example, California State University may be listed as CSU).
List the date at which you began study at this institution (From Date) and the date you left (or will be leaving) this institution (To Date).
In this section, provide the Level of Study (Undergraduate, Graduate, or Other), Degree Awarded / Expected, Major, and information on degree conferral.
Select "Yes" from the drop-down menu to indicate that you have completed this degree or that you will complete it prior to the start of the term for which you are applying to be admitted to UCSB. You will be prompted to enter the date of conferral of your degree. This may be the same as your last date of attendance or it may differ, depending on your institution's policies.
Select "No" from the drop-down menu to indicate that you do not intend to complete this degree prior to the start of the term for which you are applying to be admitted to UCSB, or if you selected "No Degree." You will be prompted to provide the total number of courses that you will complete at this institution prior to the start of your first term of enrollment at UCSB, if admitted. You may estimate the total number of courses you expect to complete at this institution (including summer, if applicable) if you are currently enrolled or planning to re-enroll there before the start of your graduate studies.
In this section, enter the grading scale used by your institution (for example, 4.0, 5.0, 100-point, etc.). Report your Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) as listed on your university transcript, as produced by the university’s registrar. Report your GPA on the scale used at your institution.
If your institution does not use a 4.0 scale, do not convert your GPA to a 4.0 scale. For instance, if your university grades out of a maximum of 100%, and you have a cumulative average of 80% for your coursework to date, enter 80% as your Cumulative Grade Point Average, and 100% as the GPA Scale. The same approach can be used for 10.0, 8.0, or other GPA scales.
If your school does not use traditional grades, you can indicate this on the application. You will then need to provide an explanation of the grading system used by your institution (for example, narrative evaluation).
You are required to upload all pages of your complete transcript from this institution, produced by the university’s registrar, to your application. Your complete transcript should include:
- All applicable seals, stamps, and university details
- All courses taken
- Credits or hours
- Grades or marks in each course
- Terms or dates of enrollment
- Institutional grading scale, including maximum and failing grades
- Type of degree awarded or in progress
- Date of degree conferral, if awarded
- Rank or class level, if given
- Both the original language transcript and certified English translation, if applicable
Applicants receiving a degree outside of the United States: Upload all pages of your complete transcript from this institution and include your degree certificate in the same file if you have completed your degree. Include both the original language documents and certified English translations. A complete, exact and literal English translation of the original documents must be produced by the school or an official agency.
Important Reminders for Transcript Uploads
- If your full Social Security Number (SSN) appears on your documents, delete or redact it by crossing/blacking out the numbers before uploading.
- Upload an electronic copy of your transcript from your university’s registrar. Progress checks or degree audits are not acceptable.
- Your document must be saved as a PDF and the file size must not exceed 9 MB.
- Color documents are not necessary.
- The institution name and other identifying marks must be visible and clearly legible.
- Your PDF must be formatted so that it can be printed on letter-size paper - 8 ½ by 11 in (21 ½ by 30 cm).
- The transcript legend or key for each institution (usually found on the backside of the official transcript or in the school’s general catalog or website) must be included in your PDF.
DO NOT send your transcripts or any other documents directly to UCSB unless you have been admitted and chosen to attend UCSB, or you have been specifically instructed to do so. You must upload a PDF of your transcript to your application.
Requirements for Admitted Students who will Attend UCSB:
All admitted students who indicate their intent to enroll at UC Santa Barbara will be required to have official transcripts and/or WES ICAP evaluations sent directly to the UC Santa Barbara Graduate Division. Students who have earned degree(s) from institutions outside of the United States and who choose to attend UC Santa Barbara must provide a WES Document-by-Document ICAP evaluation, sent directly from WES, in order for their admission to be finalized. For all other institutions (including degrees completed within the United States and institutions where no degree was completed), final/official transcripts must be sent directly from the school attended.
Final/Official documents must be received by the UCSB Graduate Division before the first day of instruction for the quarter to which you are admitted. Detailed information can be found on the Graduate Division Admitted Students pages.
Note: UC Santa Barbara reserves the right to require official transcripts and/or WES ICAP evaluations at any time during the admissions process, and rescind any offer of admission made if discrepancies between uploaded and official documents are found.
English Language Proficiency
This page will help you determine whether or not you are required to submit English Language Proficiency Exam Scores (DET, IETLS, or TOEFL) as part of your application. All applicants are required to complete this page of the application, regardless of citizenship or residency.
Exemptions from the English language admissions requirements are permitted for applicants who have completed an undergraduate (bachelor's or equivalent) or graduate (master's, doctoral, or equivalent) degree at an accredited institution where the verified sole official language of instruction is English. The language of instruction must be verified in at least one of the following ways:
- US Institution: The institution is a regionally accredited U.S. college or university where English is the sole language of instruction, or;
- IAU World Higher Education Database (WHED): The institution lists English as the sole language of instruction in the WHED. If English is not the sole language of instruction listed (or if no language is listed at all), or if the institution does not appear on the WHED website, an exemption is not permitted.
No other documentation, including transcripts, letters, language certificates, school websites, etc. will be reviewed or accepted.
To verify if you have earned a bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited institution where the sole language of instruction is English, search for your institution in the World Higher Education Database (WHED). When you locate your institution, click on the listing and scroll to the Language(s) section. If English is the only language listed, then the institution meets the requirements to be exempt from the English language proficiency application requirements. However, if a different language appears or multiple languages are listed, the exemption requirements have not been fulfilled.
If you do not meet the exemption requirements, then you are required to submit official English language exam scores.
Admitted applicants who were approved for an admissions exemption and choose to attend UCSB must provide WES ICAP evaluations with final/official transcripts verifying degree conferral by an institution where the sole language of instruction is English. Please contact your department of interest at UCSB if you have questions.
Exemptions from application requirements do not automatically exempt incoming students from placement exams or other English proficiency evaluations. Students who were exempt from the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test (DET) requirement at the time of application / admission may still be required to take the Graduate Entry Level Placement in English (Grad ELPE) and/or International Teaching Assistant (ITA) Certification and Evaluation Process. More information will be provided prior to the start of fall quarter.
Exam Scores
If you have already sent official exam scores to UCSB, you will be able to see them listed in your application. If they are not listed and a week or more has passed since you sent your scores, please contact the Graduate Division Admissions team at gradadmissions@graddiv.ucsb.edu. You can still submit your application if your official scores have not yet been received.
Only the most recent, complete exam score report sent to the UCSB Graduate Division will be considered for admission. If multiple sets of scores are submitted for the same exam type, only those from the most recent exam date will be reviewed, regardless of whether the scores are higher or lower than any previous scores.
An excellent command of written and spoken English is required prior to enrollment at UCSB. Applicants whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Duolingo English Test (DET).
Accepted Exams and Minimum Score Requirements
The university minimum score requirements for accepted exams are listed below:
|
Exam |
Minimum Total Score |

Departments may require a higher minimum score for any test (see the Department Directory for program-specific requirements). Official test score dates must be within two years of the day the applicant submits the online graduate application (scores must display with a status of Official).
The following exams are not accepted: TOEFL ITP Plus, TOEFL Essentials, IELTS One Skill Retake, and other exams not specifically noted above.
TOEFL Score Reporting
Applicants taking the TOEFL must make arrangements directly with the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Instruct ETS to report scores to UCSB as a Designated Score Recipient at institution code 4835 via your ETS account. A department code is not required, but all scores will be received centrally by the Graduate Division as long as they are sent to institution code 4835.
IELTS Score Reporting
Applicants taking the IELTS must make arrangements directly with IELTS for testing and score reporting. Scores may be mailed from IELTS or sent electronically (preferred), and this process may differ depending on whether you complete the exam in a testing centre or online.
Electronic scores (preferred) should be sent to the University of California Santa Barbara - Graduate Admissions. If sending paper test reports, please have your score report sent to the Graduate Division:
UCSB Graduate Division
Attn: Graduate Admissions
3117 Cheadle Hall
Santa Barbara, CA 93106-2070
Duolingo English Test (DET) Score Reporting
The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test that can be taken online, on-demand, in under an hour. Certified results are available online within 48 hours of the test session and may be sent to the UCSB Graduate Division electronically through your online account. Select University of California Santa Barbara - Graduate Admissions from the list of institutions and add your UCSB Application/Reference ID number (if available) before sending.
The GRE is required for some of our graduate degree programs. Be sure to review the complete list of application requirements on our Department Directory pages to determine whether or not the program to which you are applying requires the General GRE. Some departments also require applicants to take the GRE Subject Tests. Please note that GRE score requirements are subject to change at the start of each application cycle.
Reporting and Submitting GRE Scores
Official GRE scores are those submitted directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Scores are valid for five years after your test administration date. If you are not sure when your scores expire, please contact ETS directly to inquire.
Applicants must make arrangements to take the GRE directly with ETS and should instruct ETS to report scores to the UCSB graduate institution (the institution code is 4835). You do not need to provide an ETS department code when sending your scores, but if you do provide a department code we will still receive your scores.
Only the most recent, complete test score report sent to the UCSB Graduate Institution will be reviewed for admission.
Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required as part of your application. You will be asked to supply the name, email address, current institution, relationship, and reference type of each recommender. Once supplied, the online application will provide instructions to each of your recommenders via email.
If your recommender knows you by a name other than the Lived Name you provided, you may customize how your name will display to this recommender. This will only affect the display of your name to this individual recommender.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 gives students (persons admitted and enrolled in the university) the right to inspect letters of recommendation written in support of an application for admission and financial assistance. In addition, the law permits students to expressly waive the right to inspect letters submitted on their behalf, although such a waiver must be voluntary and cannot be a condition of admission, award, or employment.
Per recommender, you can indicate whether or not you waive your rights of access to this letter of recommendation. Note that if you choose to retain your right to access a letter, you may only submit a request to view the letter if you are admitted, choose to attend UCSB, and subsequently matriculate.
You will be prompted to certify that you have not written, edited, or contributed to the drafting of each recommender's letter. In addition, you will not be able to alter the information that you submit after sending the request to your recommender, so be sure to review your entries carefully before clicking the "Send to Recommender" button.
Applicants may choose to utilize a service that stores and sends previously written letters on the recommender’s behalf (such as Interfolio or a university career center). If you are using a letter service to submit one or more letters, you will be able to indicate this information within the recommender profile. Though the letter request will be sent to the Letter Service, you must provide both the Letter Service Email and the direct contact email address for the recommender who is writing the letter.
Experience
In this section, you will provide some information about your experience, both academic and professional.
List your positions of employment or volunteer work / community service since high school, either full or part-time, including the hours per week worked and the nature and dates of employment or service.
Note: Do not include GRE scores on your Résumé or Curriculum Vitae (CV) if your program does not accept them.
In this optional section, you may enter any research programs in which you have participated (including summer programs). To do so, click the green Add Program button. In the Program Participation pop-up window, select the program you participated in from the Program dropdown menu. If your program is not listed, select "Other Research Program (Not Listed)" and manually enter the name. Add the Start Date to indicate when you began the research program and End Date for when you left the program. If you are currently in the program, leave the End Date blank. You may use the Add Program button to add multiple programs.
In the Research Experience and Teaching Experience fields, you may provide a few sentences describing your specific experience in these areas, if they pertain to your proposed field of graduate study. These sections should complement, not repeat, your Statement of Purpose by emphasizing the experiences that best demonstrate your preparation for graduate study.
In this optional section, you may choose to share information about your professional experience that is relevant to your intended degree program at UCSB. This includes your Current Profession, Current Job Title, and a general description of your Work Experience.
Required Statements
Both a Statement of Purpose and a Personal History Statement are required as part of your graduate application. The Statement of Purpose should focus on your academic / research background and interests. The Personal History Statement is an opportunity for you to provide additional details or background information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCSB. Complete applications are reviewed using a holistic evaluation process that considers both statements as well as the other information provided in your application.
In addition to the prompts provided below, your department / program may request that you address specific questions or topics in your statements. Be sure to review the complete list of application requirements on our Department Directory pages.
Give a brief statement outlining your reasons for undertaking a graduate program, your particular area of specialization within the major field, your past academic work, and your plans for future occupation or profession. Also include any additional information that may assist the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UC Santa Barbara.
Your Statement of Purpose must be written in narrative (essay) form without duplicating content from your Personal History Statement.
UC Santa Barbara is interested in a diverse and inclusive graduate student population. Please describe any aspects of your personal background, accomplishments, or achievements that you feel are important in evaluating your application for graduate study. For example, please describe if you have experienced economic challenges in achieving higher education, such as being financially responsible for family members or dependents, having to work significant hours during undergraduate schooling or coming from a family background of limited income. Please describe if you have any unusual or varied life experiences that might contribute to the diversity of the graduate group, such as fluency in other languages, experience living in bi-cultural communities, academic research interests focusing on cultural, societal, or educational problems as they affect under-served segments of society, or evidence of an intention to use the graduate degree toward serving disadvantaged individuals or populations.
Your Personal History Statement must be written in narrative (essay) form without duplicating content from your Statement of Purpose. A minimum word count of 250 words is required. There is no maximum length requirement. Most statements are typically 1-2 pages.
Supporting Documents
Some programs require a Department Form, Writing Sample(s), and/or other submissions to complete your application. For complete information on additional or supplemental required documents, review the Requirements section of the Department Directory page for the department / program to which you are applying. Do not upload additional documents that are not required by your prospective department.
Application Survey
On this optional page, you can share information that helps us understand how you learned about UC Santa Barbara and your program of interest.

On the final page of the application, you may review any required information that is not yet complete. Errors must be corrected prior to application submission. You may click on the error to be taken directly to the corresponding application page. The Warnings at the bottom of the page list any missing information that is not required in order to submit your application, but may still be required for your application to be considered complete.
Once all errors have been corrected, you will be able to submit your application.
Submitting your application is an irreversible action. Ensure your application is complete and accurate before submitting your application.
Fee Payment Information
All applications require a non-refundable application fee. If you are a US citizen or Permanent Resident, the application fee is $135; for all others, the application fee is $155. No application will be processed until the application fee has been received. This fee can be paid after your application has been submitted from the Applicant Portal. The application fee can be paid by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or with a check/money order using the Check/Money Order Submission Form found in the portal.
Note: Your completed application, including a successful application fee payment, must be submitted and received prior to the application deadline.
The Fee Waiver Request page will become available after you have completed the Academic Program and Citizenship pages of the application. More information and eligibility requirements can be found on the Requesting an Application Fee Waiver page on our website.
Updating the Application
It is important that you keep your address, phone number, and email address up to date during the application process. Otherwise, important notifications regarding applications, missing supporting materials, or admissions decisions may be seriously delayed or lost. Departments will notify the Graduate Division of any changes.
Please note that once your application has been submitted, you cannot make changes to the content of your online application. Please review your application carefully before submitting. You will be able to view your application responses after submission by accessing the Application Proof in the Applicant Portal.
